  42. Most computers with web browsers can read this CD-ROM, 
  43. including, PC's running Windows 95 or higher, or Windows 
  44. NT4.0 or higher, UNIX, and Macintosh. First, start the 
  45. web browser and then open the "index.htm" file in the top 
  46. directory of this CD-ROM.

  51. Accurate base maps are a prerequisite for any geologic 
  52. study, regardless of the objectives. Land-based studies 
  53. commonly utilize aerial photographs, USGS 7.5-minute 
  54. quadrangle maps, and satellite images as base maps. Until 
  55. now, studies that involve the ocean floor have been at a 
  56. disadvantage due to an almost complete lack of accurate 
  57. marine base maps. Many base maps of the sea floor have been 
  58. constructed over the past century but with a wide range in 
  59. navigational and depth accuracies.

  61. Only in the past few years has marine surveying technology 
  62. advanced far enough to produce navigational accuracy of 1 
  63. meter and depth resolutions of 50 centimeters. The Pacific 
  64. Seafloor Mapping Project of the U.S. Geological Survey╒s, 
  65. Western Coastal and Marine Geology Program, Menlo Park, 
  66. California, U.S.A., in cooperation with the Ocean Mapping 
  67. Group, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, Canada, 
  68. is using this new technology to systematically map the 
  69. ocean floor and lakes. This type of marine surveying, 
  70. called multibeam surveying, collects high-resolution 
  71. bathymetric and backscatter data that can be used for 
  72. various base maps, GIS coverages, and scientific 
  73. visualization methods.

  75. This is an interactive CD-ROM that contains images, movies, 
  76. and data of all the surveys the Pacific Seafloor Mapping 
  77. Project has completed up to January 1999. The images and 
  78. movies on this CD-ROM, such as shaded relief of the 
  79. bathymetry, backscatter, oblique views, 3-D views, and 
  80. QuickTime movies help the viewer to visualize the multibeam 
  81. data. This CD-ROM also contains ARC/INFO export (.e00) files 
  82. and full-resolution TIFF images of all the survey sites that 
  83. can be downloaded and used in many GIS packages.

  138. and Macintosh HFS standards.

  141. TO GET STARTED:

  143. Open the web browser on the computer. Under "Open File", open 
  144. the "index.htm" file in the top directory of this CD-ROM. 
  145. Navigate through the different survey areas by choosing the 
  146. areas of your choice. View images of the ocean and lake 
  147. floors by clicking on the various buttons. Load the Arc/Info 
  148. export files, or TIFF images to your computer by clicking on 
  149. the appropriate file name in the "Download Data" page.
